International Protection recipients: citizenship now requires 5 years (was 3)

From 8 December 2025, people granted International Protection must have 5 years of reckonable residence before applying for citizenship — up from 3 years (which applied since 2011). Applications already submitted before 8 December 2025 continue under the old rule.

Minister Jim O'Callaghan received government approval to amend Irish nationality legislation, proposing to tighten and clarify citizenship criteria. Timing of legislative change not yet announced.
