From 1 June 2026, applicants can no longer appeal the refusal of a short-stay visa. You must submit a brand new application if refused. Appeals continue only for EU Free Movement Directive categories (EU/EEA/Swiss family members).
International Protection recipients: citizenship now requires 5 years (was 3)
From 8 December 2025, people granted International Protection must have 5 years of reckonable residence before applying for citizenship — up from 3 years (which applied since 2011). Applications already submitted before 8 December 2025 continue under the old rule.
Family reunification policy overhauled — stricter rules for sponsors
Revised policy effective 26 November 2025: stricter eligibility criteria, new financial capacity thresholds, application fees introduced, possible accommodation requirements, and applications must be made from outside Ireland.
ISD has extended the concession period from 8 weeks to 12 weeks. Employees with expired IRP cards can continue working for 12 weeks provided they have proof of a submitted renewal application.
Citizenship criteria to be tightened — legislative change pending
Minister Jim O'Callaghan received government approval to amend Irish nationality legislation, proposing to tighten and clarify citizenship criteria. Timing of legislative change not yet announced.
International protection: new social protection restriction for citizenship
International protection applicants must not have received certain social protection payments in the two years before applying for citizenship. New powers to revoke refugee status for security concerns or serious crime.
ISD Customer Service Portal — new security upgrade
ISD is implementing a security upgrade requiring additional identity verification when signing into the Customer Service Portal. Ensure your contact details are up to date before rollout.
Safe country list expanded — 6 new countries added
Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, India, Malawi and Morocco added to Ireland's safe country list. Applications from these nationals now go through accelerated procedures — faster decisions but higher scrutiny.
First-time IRP registrations centralised to Dublin and Cork
Non-EEA nationals must register in person at designated offices in Dublin (Burgh Quay) or Cork only. Appointments can take several weeks to secure. Book as early as possible.
Ukrainian Temporary Protection extended — renewals to 2027 pending
Immigration permissions for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection extended to 4 March 2026. Applications to renew to 2026 closed. Instructions for renewing to 2027 will issue shortly.
AVATS online visa system — updated documentation guidance
ISD updated guidance for each visa category on the AVATS online application system. Applicants who carefully follow published guidance are significantly more likely to receive a positive outcome.
Trusted Partner Initiative expanded for employment permits
DETE expanded accreditation for the Trusted Partner Initiative. Accredited employers get Critical Skills and General Employment Permits processed in 2–5 working days vs the standard 3-month wait.
